Mazinger Z was created by Dr. Kabuto after he witness the treachery and evil of Dr. Hell first hand. They had found the remains of an ancient civilization and, within those remains, they had found ancient robots. While Dr. Kabuto and the others worked to find out more about that culture, Dr. Hell figured out how the robots worked and took control of them, turning them against hs fellow scientist. Only Dr. Kabuto escaped with the knowledge that Dr. Hell was planning on taking over the world. To fight against that he began to develop a powerful robot to combat the threat however Dr. Hell heard of this and sent his servant Ashura to deal with the matter. Dr. Kabuto's home was destroyed but not the secret underground laboratory where it was discovered by Dr. Kabuto's grandsons. Here Koji first manned Mazinger Z and used its power to overcome his lack of experience and defeated Garadaka K7 and Douglas M2.
